KODUNGALLUR BHARANI |

Bharani festival is celebrated in the Sree kumba bhagavathi temple one of the grandest and ancient temples in kerala. This festival comes in the month of march/ april pilgrims flock to Kodungallur offering rice, salt, chillies, betel leaves, nuts and number of cocks. These offerings are said to safeguard the pilgrims and their friends from the attack of diseases. |

PONGALA |

This ritual is unique because only women are allowed to participate in this ritual.Thousands of female devotees from many parts of the kerala, flock together in the vicinity of the temple and offer Pongala. Pongala is a kind of sweet porridge, considered to be the deity’s favourite offering. It is cooked by each devotee in a earthen pot on an open fire till the porridge boil over . This is offered by the devotees to get relief from illness and accomplish wishes |

A colourful twenty eight day annual festival is being held to for some unknown reason. These celebrations ceased and in there place today , we see the spectacular Peruvanam Arattupuzha pooram. The uniqueness of this festival is that the images of the deities of neighbouring temples are brought to this village. In anicient days the temple belongs to the lower caste peoples. Many strange rituals exists such us offering alcohol and cocks which are the main gifts of the devotees. In the festival day huge ornamented wooden structures are carrying to the mountain top of the temple. The wooden structures look like bulls and horses. Kottankulangara is one of the famous temple in kollam district.’’VILAKK’’ festival is an important item of the temple. A group of men dress like women hold beautiful shining lamps and stand on both sides of the way of the temple. Small boys also take part dressed as girls. |

Thookam is being conducted only in Bhagavathi temples. This is to eliminate fear especially of children from their mind. Thookam is performed by specially trained devoties, whos body is tightly tied with the span of the chariot, which is fifteen feet height from the ground.

CHARIOT RACE |

Perumon temple situated on the banks of Ashtamudi lake and the deity sits facing east. Every year devotees of the temple conducts Chariot race, on that day devotees come from different parts of the district.A tall decorated structure on wooden rollers are moved by devotees. The devotees believe that this sight of the moving chariot will wash of there sins. All the sins of the devotees will be vanished while seeing the chariot race. |

Padayani is performed in two districts Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha of central and southern kerala . It is the festival of people who believe that their lives are the gift of the great mountains .Padayani is performed with all its riot of colours , artistic postures , architectural posses , hauntic music , rich literature ,dances and rhythemic movements . It is also a fusion of 64 different art forms . The symphony and rhythm of padayani reflect the rhythms of rural life . padayani portrays stories with historical background. Padayani has a therapaeutic side as it is said that it can be used to treat epilepsy .
