Edakkal cave have a cleft about 96 feet length and 20 to 22 feet width in the rock having a fissure at the inner end, leading some 50 feet to the outer edge of the rock. The fissure occurred due to some natural causes, the depth of both the cleft and fissure comes about 30 feet. The approach to the cave is from the eastern side of the hill through the coffee estates. The entrance have 6ft height and 5ft width. |

In the 1896 Mr.F.Fawcete, Superintendent of police, Malabar, discovered this natural cave near Sulthan’s Battery in Wayanad. The walls of the cave are covered with crude fanciful drawings and bear five short inscriptions. The most interesting features of the sculptures are the frequent human figures with a peculiar head dress decorated with several indistinct figures of animals. The other carvings include swastik, Deer or Dog, Womens, Men dancing in masks or masked head dresses and sun symbols etc… |
